Mesha Maren - Sugar Run & Amanda Goldblatt - Hard Mouth

Upcoming Event
Sunday, November 3, 2019 - 3:00pm to 4:00pm

Now available in paperback, Maren’s taut and atmospheric first novel unfolds along a dual timeline, telling the story of Jodi McCarty, an adventurous West Virginian, both before and after the eighteen years she served in prison for killing her girlfriend. Just 17 when she shot Paula, Jodi is 35 when she’s released but can’t start a new life until she’s made amends for her crime. Maren skillfully fills in details about the fateful events of 1989 while recounting Jodi’s return to her hometown in 2007, which is complicated, first, by her involvement with Miranda, a mother of three on the run from her husband, and then by the discovery that frackers are after her family property.

In her powerful debut novel, Goldblatt, a 2018 NEA Creative Writing Fellow, tells the story of Denny, a young woman struggling to help her father through a protracted illness. The experience has severely constricted her own life, and when her father’s cancer recurs for a third time, she’s desperate to escape her lab job and her one friend. Without saying goodbye she heads for a remote mountain cabin. But instead of the detachment she’d hoped for, she finds unexpected company and a new set of challenges. Written after her own father was diagnosed with cancer, Goldblatt’s empathetic fiction evokes the complex emotions of the uncertain terrain of illness and grief.
