Every Man Dies Alone -- Hans Fallada

Staff Pick

Every Man Dies Alone (sometimes also known as Alone in Berlin in English) is the story of a middle aged German couple using propaganda to take on the Nazi regime. Hans Fallada is at his best in this work, with its rotating cast. His trademark ability to create fully-realized characters that live real lives is on full display—once again putting ordinary humans in extraordinary circumstances. It is a tale of German resistance to the Nazis on what might be called a petit scale, with significant consequence. Foregoing tales of assassination attempts and clandestine organizations, it instead favors the small acts, expressions of a will towards a better life. Every Man Dies Alone is not a story of grand triumph, but a tale that speaks to the importance of demonstrable resistance.
