Embarking on higher education can be an exciting time, full of opportunities to explore your interests and meet new people. However, it can also be a difficult transition - between adapting to a new environment, keeping on top of deadlines and trying to socialize, managing your anxiety can feel like a huge task.

Written by award-winning student mental health expert Dr Dominique Thompson, this easy-to-read guide will help readers understand where their anxiety comes from and why it exists. Whatever the source of their worries or phobias, this book will help readers understand their anxiety and help them develop the tools they need to address it.

With lots of real-world examples, Dr Thompson shows the many ways that anxiety affects people, helping readers develop strategies that are truly relevant to their personal experiences. Just as importantly, they will learn about the unhelpful things that people try to do to manage anxiety, which can do more harm than good.

Above all, this book will help readers navigate their lives and studies - without feeling like their anxieties are in charge.

Dr Dominique Thompson has worked with university students for nearly two decades, and in 2017 contributed towards a landmark report on the nation's student wellbeing, as well as being involved in the Mental Wellbeing in Higher Education working group of Universities UK. Dr Thompson now works with universities across the UK on their mental health strategies, as well as providing training to university staff. She was named Bristol Healthcare Professional of the Year 2017. In 2019 she was nominated as one of the Top 100 West Women of the Year. Dominique has helped design apps and websites to support student mental health and writes books on the topic. She has been interviewed widely, including by The Guardian and BBC Radio 4's Today programme. Her books are written with the aim of helping young people and their parents to feel more supported when dealing with stress, gaining independence and resilience.
