ONLINE CLASS: Deep Poetry: Reading Audre Lorde and Sylvia Plath (2095)

Four Thursdays: October 29, November 5, 12, 19, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

$120.00 (10% off for members)

In this deep reading of two of the most monumental and fascinating poets of the twentieth century, we will consider the interplay of multiple dimensions: sound, meter, tone, rhetoric, and iconography. Keeping in mind T.S. Eliot’s insight that a major poet is one whose various works cast light on each other, our discussion of poems will also be informed by Lorde’s memoir and essays and Plath’s fiction, journals, artwork, and letters.

What did being a poet mean for each of these ambitious women, born two years apart? How do issues of gender, race, nationality, and sexuality affect their poems? How did they navigate between the forces of meter and free verse? How does each of them construct a symbolic world to carry her through her life’s work? Contemplating the influence of previous women poets on Lorde and Plath and their own influence on subsequent poets, we will come to new understandings about two amazing bodies of work, about women’s poetic traditions, and about poetry itself. Note date and price adjustment: Four Thursdays: October 29, November 5, 12, 19, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Online Class.
