P&P Live! : Alina Das - No Justice in the Shadows: How America Criminalizes Immigrants, in conversation with Dara Lind

Upcoming Event
Monday, April 20, 2020 - 7:00pm

This event will be streamed online as part of our P&P Live! Series.

An award-winning immigrant rights activist, lawyer, and professor at New York University School of Law, where she also co-directs the NYU Immigrant Rights Clinic, Das in her important new book shows that Trump’s anti-immigration stand is only the latest—if most extreme—iteration of a long history of the idea of the “criminal alien.” Combining detailed analysis of the system—which more closely resembles a “deportation machine”—with stories of some of the 300,000 caught up in it annually, Das shows how immigrants are divided into categories like “deserving” or “undeserving,” with the bulk of the latter targeted for minor offenses. Only by confronting this cruelty, she argues, can we build an inclusive immigration policy based on human dignity. Das will be in conversation with Dara Lind, a reporter on immigration for ProPublica and former senior correspondent at Vox. She is the co-host of Vox's podcast The Weeds.
