P&P Live @ Lunch!: David Eagleman -- Livewired: The Inside Story of the Ever-Changing Brain

Upcoming Event
Wednesday, September 2, 2020 - 1:00pm

This event will be streamed online as part of our P&P Live @ Lunch! Series

Why does the world’s best archer not have any arms? Can we control a robot with our thoughts, just as we do our fingers and toes? What does drug withdrawal have in common with a broken heart? What is memory… and why is the enemy of memory not time, but other memories? How can a blind person learn to see with her tongue, or a deaf person learn to hear with his skin? The answers to these questions are right behind our eyes. Join neuroscientist and internationally best-selling author Dr. David Eagleman as he explores the magic of our brains -- and all they can do.

Dr. Eagleman will discuss "LIVEWIRED: The Inside Story of the Ever-Changing Brain" and present new discoveries from his own laboratory, from synesthesia to dreaming to wearable neurotech devices that revolutionize how we think about the senses. He'll discuss biohackers, humans using echolocation, and the present and future of AI.

Dr. DAVID EAGLEMAN is a neuroscientist and a New York Times bestselling author. He heads the Center for Science and Law, a national non-profit institute, and serves as an adjunct professor at Stanford University. He is best known for his work on sensory substitution, time perception, brain plasticity, synesthesia, and neurolaw. The author of seven previous books, Eagleman lives in Silicon Valley in California.

Instead of a set ticket price, we ask that you contribute what you can to support Politics and Prose Bookstore and our virtual event series. We know that everyone has been affected in these trying times, and we will continue to make our programming accessible to all. That said, by purchasing this book or making a suggested contribution of $5, $10, whatever you can afford, will go a long way to keep our programming—and our bookstore—afloat as we are forced to adapt to new ways of business. We are so grateful to be surrounded by such a loyal and engaged community and we thank you for your support, now and always.
