Masha Rumer struggled to navigate her teenage years after immigrating to the United States from the Soviet Union in the 1990s. Now she uses her personal experience as a launch pad to explore the current realities of immigrant families in America. Combining interviews with families and experts with empirical research, she addresses challenges including acculturation, bilingualism, intercultural relationships and discrimination. Relatable and at times humorous vignettes personalize these issues, showing how families honor their heritage while adapting to American life. Compassionate and convincing, Rumer centers the diverse needs and challenges of immigrants at a time when they are often mischaracterized, reminding us that immigrants have always been the backbone of our nation.

Masha Rumer is an award-winning journalist and freelance writer. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, Quartz, the Moscow Times, Parents.com, SFWeekly, Volume 1 Brooklyn, and elsewhere. Parenting With an Accent is her first book. She resides with her family in California.

Lara Vapnyar is the author of the acclaimed novels, Memoirs of a Muse, The Scent of Pine, Still Here, and Divide Me By Zero, as well as two collections of short stories, There Are Jews in My House and Broccoli and Other Tales of Food and Love. She is a recipient of the Guggenheim fellowship and the Goldberg Prize for Jewish fiction. Her stories and essays have appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Harper’s, and The New Republic.
