Thomas Travisano - Love Unknown: The Life and Worlds of Elizabeth Bishop

Upcoming Event
Saturday, February 29, 2020 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

Travisano, emeritus professor of English at Hartwick College, principal editor of Words in Air, and founding president of the Elizabeth Bishop Society, draws on extensive scholarship as well as on new material and interviews for an insightful and compelling look at one of the greatest and best-loved American poets. Charting Bishop’s famous “art of losing,” Travisano recounts her early losses of her parents to death and mental breakdown, her complicated love affairs, and her depression and alcoholism. He also illuminates her “art of finding,” reflected in deep friendships with Marianne Moore and Robert Lowell, her love of travel, and the perfectionism that resulted in a slim published output—just 100 poems—but accolades including the Pulitzer, the National Book Award, and the Neustadt International Prize for Literature.
