Sturkey’s detailed history of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, from its 1882 founding to its key role in the civil rights movement, powerfully conveys the realities of the Jim Crow era. In alternating narratives Sturkey, assistant professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and co-editor of To Write in the Light of Freedom, charts the parallel and starkly unequal experiences of the town’s Black and white residents, telling the stories of die-hard members of the Old South—including Faulkner’s great-grandfather, a Confederate veteran—and several generations of the Smith family, who started as rural sharecroppers and eventually ran a pharmacy where Medgar Evers and others would meet to strategize.
