First Family: Abigail and John Adams - Joseph J. Ellis

I was utterly charmed from the earliest pages of FIRST FAMILY: Abigail and John Adams (Knopf, $27.95).  Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Joseph J. Ellis, provides us with an intimate portrait of our nation’s first “power couple.”  In many ways, John and Abigail Adams were a very modern team, not only discussing family concerns, but also sharing ideas and discourse about politics.  Abigail provided unconditional love and support to her husband, often putting aside her own wishes to fulfill her role as helpmate.  John, in response, leaned on his wife, acknowledging her intellect and superiority in many areas, and often exclaiming that he could do nothing without her.  What comes through in this book is the genuine passion, honesty, loyalty, and respect they felt toward each other.  Ellis has given us a warm and affectionate history of married partners shaping American history.
