So Late in the Day by Claire Keegan

Staff Pick

This trio of short stories reprints two of the Foster author's works from earlier collections (the third appeared in The New Yorker), all showcasing Keegan's knack for unspooling characters in devastating fashion. While the three protagonists emerge from a more contemporary setting than those in her novels, the stories still pulsate with wondrous loneliness as the men and women within lament predicaments ranging from writing to affairs to love squandered. Though not new, these pieces are a perfect introduction for Keegan newcomers or a welcome addition to the canon for the converted.

The List by Yomi Adegoke

Staff Pick

Adegoke's debut novel wonderfully evokes the social zeitgeist through Ola and Micheal; young, Black, and in love, they are the internet's ideal "couple goals."  But when The List names Michael as an accused abuser, Ola is torn between believing the victims and believing her partner. As the chapters count down to the couple's wedding day, "will they or won't they" acquires new levels of meaning, making the book a perfect comment on the infuriating insanity of the internet and the grey area of being human.
