Ladies of Liberty: The Women Who Shaped Our Nation - Cokie Roberts

In Ladies Of Liberty (Harper Perennial, $15.99) Cokie Roberts picks up where she left off in Founding Mothers: George Washington is dead, and the young nation is struggling to keep itself together during the transition. Luckily, our plucky heroines Abigail Adams, Dolley Madison, Martha Jefferson Randolph, and others are there to encourage, push, nag, and prod their husbands in the right direction. With the women’s sacrifices, our country becomes unified and strong, and while the ladies haven’t always gotten the credit they deserve, Ms. Roberts’s delightful book does a great job of giving them their due.

Unaccustomed Earth - Jhumpa Lahiri

Jhumpa Lahiri’s third book, Unaccustomed Earth (Knopf, $25), is a collection of eight short stories, each of which packs the punch of a novel.  In the title story, Ruma debates the merits and disadvantages of asking her aging father to live with her growing family; in another, Sudha watches her brother throw away his life in the grips of an addiction he cannot control; in a third, Amit considers how his Bengali upbringing and values are so thoroughly different from those of his American wife, and how that affects their relationship. Lahiri deftly spins her satisfying stories in a way that not only makes you identify with the memorable characters, but also builds toward a stunning conclusion that will haunt you long after you close the book.

When Will There Be Good News? - Kate Atkinson

Kate Atkinson’s newest novel When Will There Be Good News? (Little, Brown, $24.99) begins with six-year-old Joanna trotting home from town with her mother and her siblings. They encounter a creepy stranger who interrupts their walk and alters the course of their lives forever. Thirty years later, the man is released from prison, the adult Joanna and her baby disappear from their comfortable Edinburgh suburb, and only the nanny seems to care.  Enter Jackson Brodie and Louise Monroe, two flawed yet endearing characters readers will remember from previous Atkinson books, who reluctantly take on the case. As the search for Joanna and her infant escalates and the mysteries multiply, it’ll be hard to put the book down until its stunning conclusion leaves you breathless with surprise.
